Health Care Stories: Harrisonburg, VA

Twenty-five years ago, my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and began treatment. Both my parents worked all their lives and they had saved up through their pensions and the value of their house. After retirement they lived on that plus their two Social Securities. Despite a lifetime of hard work, even with being on Medicare, it took only 2-3 years of my mother being treated for Alzheimer’s to deplete their entire life savings. One disease wiped out two lifetimes worth of hard work. Anyone who believes that they have enough savings and the value of a house to protect them should know that all of us are vulnerable.
